"Wait, it plugs into the wall?" It's the first question almost every pet owner asks about a grounding bed, and it's a good one. Anything that connects to a power socket and sits under your dog or cat deserves a close look.
Here are the questions we hear most, with straight answers.
Does electricity flow through the bed?
No. A grounding bed doesn't use electricity at all. There's no battery, no heating element and no power supply.
Every standard Australian power socket has three pins: active, neutral and earth. The active and neutral pins carry electricity to your appliances. The earth pin is a safety connection that runs to the ground outside your home. A grounding cord connects only to the earth pin. Its job is to link the conductive fabric in the bed to the earth, the same connection your pet would get lying on grass.

Why do I need to test the socket?
The earth connection only works if your home's wiring is correct. Older homes, renovations and DIY electrical work can occasionally leave a socket wired incorrectly.
A plug-in socket tester takes a few seconds to use and shows whether the outlet is correctly wired and earthed. Check the socket before you connect the bed for the first time, and again if you move it to a different outlet. If the tester shows a fault, don't use that socket, and have a licensed electrician take a look.
What if my pet chews the cord?
Puppies and some adult dogs chew anything within reach, so plan the cord's route before you set the bed up:
- Run the cord behind furniture or along the skirting board.
- Use a cord cover or cable channel if the cord has to cross open floor.
- Place the bed close to the socket so there's as little exposed cord as possible.
- Check the cord regularly for wear, and replace it if it's damaged.
If your dog is a determined chewer, supervise the first few days until you're confident they're leaving it alone.

The Grounding Heart Pet Bed has a full waterproof encasement around the inner bed, so every foam layer is protected from accidents, water bowls and wet paws. The outer bouclé cover is removable for washing, and spare covers are available so the bed stays in use on wash day.
Are EMFs or "dirty electricity" a concern?
You'll find plenty of claims online that grounding products expose you to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) or "dirty electricity" from your home's wiring. A correctly wired earth connection isn't part of the circuit that powers your appliances, and it carries no current under normal conditions. The most practical thing you can do is make sure your socket is correctly wired and earthed, which is exactly what the socket tester checks.
Is grounding right for every pet?
Grounding is a wellness practice, not a veterinary treatment. If your pet has a medical condition, is on medication, or you notice any change in their health, talk to your vet. A grounding bed is not a substitute for veterinary care.
Some pets simply prefer a different spot at first. That's normal, and most settle in within a few days, especially if the bed is placed where they already like to rest.
Your safety checklist
- Test the socket with a socket tester before first use.
- Connect the cord to the bed, then plug it into the tested socket.
- Keep the cord out of reach of chewing.
- Check the cord regularly and replace it if worn.
- Follow the setup instructions supplied with your bed.
Frequently asked questions
Can my pet get a shock from a grounding bed? The bed doesn't carry electrical current and connects only to the earth pin of a correctly wired socket. Test the socket first and keep the cord in good condition.
Can I leave the bed plugged in all the time? Yes. The bed draws no power, so it can stay connected while your pet rests.
Does the bed work when it's unplugged? It's still a comfortable orthopaedic bed, but the grounding connection only works when the cord is connected to a correctly wired socket.
Is it safe for puppies and kittens? The bed itself is safe, but young animals chew. Keep the cord well out of reach and supervise until you're confident.
